Artist Description/Story
Satire on the financial crisis in Paris in 1720. At the top, a banderole held by a raven and an owl reads, "Of Stront of Koning" above a scene in a kitchen. In the centre, a portrait on an oval canvas of 'Heer Quinquenpoix' (John Law), facing to the right and holding a money bag, rests in a cauldron into which a young man throws coins; beneath, a fire is fed by two satyrs with shares, certificates, etc.
On the left, stands Vanity displaying a picture of the fall of Icarus; behind her is Diogenes with a lantern seeking in vain for an honest man and a naked female figure of Rage or Envy; a braying donkey appears above. Folly crowns Law with a coronet of peacock feathers and thistle leaves, lettered "MDCCXXI"; a banderole hanging from Folly's right arm reads 'Voor wys en zot, Voor elk ten spot' (Wise and fool, each to scorn). On the right, a female figure holds a flaming torch of straw signifying short-lived success; in front of her stands Despair holding a dagger and a flaming torch.
